Peter Schertz, curator of ancient art at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, discussed a recent study of the larger than life-size statue of the emperor Gaius, better known as Caligula (“little boot”) that resides at the VMFA. Advanced scanning technologies have produced highly detailed 3-D digital reconstructions of the statue that include hypothetical renderings of its original coloring. Schertz also will talk about recent the Jewish response to Caligula’s threat to put a statue of himself in their temple in Jerusalem. The annual Kurt T. Luckner Lecture is cosponsored by the Archaeological Institute of America-Toledo Society and the Toledo Museum of Art.
