Casey Hoy, Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center, The Ohio State University, spoke on "Social Networking to Build Local Economies Starting with Food." Agriculture in its many forms still accounts for approximately one third of the Ohio economy. Sustainability in agriculture, whether rural or urban, requires a reconnection of people with the land and farming, and economic opportunities that not only sustain farms economically but also forge strong bonds between arms and communities and protect and enhance the soil and biodiversity on which agriculture depends. The presentation was part of the Local Food Systems Conference held at the Toledo Hilton. The conference aimed to bring together both academics and practitioners to share their knowledge, experience, and expertise with regard to developing and maintaining local food systems in old industrial regions.
